Apple’s Latest A6 Chipset

The latest chipset by Apple, the A6 Chipset, is used in the elite smartphone- iPhone 5. But in the iPhone 5 event, Apple provided us with very little information about this new chipset, so we decided to do speculate.

All we know is that the A6 chipset has a 2x faster processor and 2x better graphics than the A5 chipset. They did not mention the core count, the clock speed or even the architecture of the A6 chipset.

Since the iPhone 5 has an LTE support, which is uniquely available in just the iPhone 5 as Apple announced, this tells us that it will not have a quad-core chipset.  By chance, if it did have a quad-core, then Apple would have announced it on the event. Since the A5 chipset is dual-core, and Apple never announced that the new chipset has a quad-core processor, and then we can be sure that the A6 chipset does not have any quad-core processor.

So the quad-core option is no more available and this leaves us to 3 dual-core processors.
  • Dual-core Krait processor
  • Dual-core processor made like the latest Cortex A15 architecture
  • Dual core Cortex A9 chip, which is clocked somewhere between 1.5-2.0 GHz
Over clocking the A5X chipset might not give us 2x in performance, so an overclocked A5 chipset is not a viable option.

Dual-core Krait processor is a good option, since Krait processors have been proven to be 2x faster than as the Cortex A9 dual-core chips, much like the A5 chipset. It has the capability of being fast and gives good performance. The Krait processor is being used as a processor in many smartphones available in the market. But Apple is all about uniqueness (which is why it sued Samsung), and since the Krait processor is being used by so many phones, we can make out the fact of why Apple decided not to tell us anything about the processor itself.

Now at last but not the least, the Cortex A15 architecture. Well, this chipset has the potential to bring lots of upgrades, and talking about uniqueness, the iPhone 5 will be the first phone to use this chipset. On the other hand, if the iPhone 5 did include the Cortex A15 chipset, then Apple would have used this as a topic and probably made a big deal out of it in stage, because this processor has the power to surpass the Samsung Galaxy phones and also the HTC One X.

Still, after all the digging and researching, it’s highly likely that the dual-core Krait processor is being used inside the iPhone 5. If this is the chipset, then there is a high possibility that it has an Adreno 305 GPU and 1 GB RAM, which are the unknown facts about the new iPhone 5. We hope that our guess is right, or at least we’ll just have to wait for Apple to tells us all about the unknown facts about the iPhone 5.
