Privacy Breach on iOS 6

A hidden feature of iOS 6 update has been uncovered.

IDFA or Identifier For Advertiser is one of the feature of the iOS 6 which Apple did not talk about. It was Apples’ feature from older models that has been remote because of users’ privacy issue. However, it was back on the iOS 6 update.

IDFA will assign series of numbers that will act like a cookie and track the app and web habits for the targeted ads. For advertisers view, it’s an advantage for them because they will be able to track if users’ web habits will lead on app downloads or purchase their services. Even though advertisers will not provide users’ information to anyone for iOS user, it is uncomfortable doing their staff when they knew someone is tracking their privacy. Thus, it is a privacy breach.

Apple understands their customers so they have provided them a way out from IDFA but it seems unnecessarily complicated. Here are the steps to do it.

• On your device, tap ‘Settings’.
• Tap ‘About’.
• Find ‘Advertising’ settings.
• From their turn ON ‘Limit Ad Tracking’. Turning it OFF will allow advertisers to track web or apps activities.

With the said option, it was confusing for some users if they will turn it Off or On and aside from that it was not place in “Privacy” which will make more sense if it’s there. As to the definition, it only says “Limit” so it’s not guaranteed that advertisers cannot track an iOS device since they can user another way of tracking the activities.

Apple said that as soon as all apps required an IDFA, users will have an option to eliminate tracking.

iOS 6 Clock Dispute Because of Copy Rights

The new clock design in iOS 6 was disputed by Swiss Federal Railway.

Swiss railway (SBB) said that the clock design has been their trademark ever since one of their employees designed it back in 1944. SBB went to Apple and told them that the design is theirs. It is hang in every train stations in the nation. The said clock design is the iOS 6 time piece.

As per Reto Kormann, SBB’s spokesman, that they were glad that a most successful company used their design to be iOS time piece. However, Apple did not ask permission. Thus violating SBB’s copyright.

Apple, on the other hand, accepted their fault and agreed to pay the license fee. Though the agreement is reach, Apple did not comment on the issue yet.

Apple Maps a Total Let Down!

Due to the numerous complaints from users, Apple has decided to tone down the elated iOS6 Maps app copy.

As the above screenshot points out, the superlatives from the previous copy of the app “the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever” was replaced with “the beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease.” The new app copy certainly takes a more modest stance.

It’s also about time that Apple changed the messed up icon as well since from the diagram below, it indicates a navigation route where the user has to make a sharp left off a bridge which is pretty messed up.

Updated Apple Maps found what was lost: Statue of Liberty

Apple is true to their promise that they will fix the messed-up maps.

The updated Apple Maps restored what was lost during its first release which is the statue of Liberty. Now, New York has been restored. Another fixed, though it’s still ongoing, is the Brooklyn Bridge. This 3D flyover was ridiculed and taunted ever since the iOS 6 had been launched last mid-September.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, once apologized to Apple users because they have failed to deliver the best experience with their iOS 6 and also did promise to fix the mess. So, we guess that this is just the beginning of their comeback. What do you think?

iOS 6 Wi-Fi connectivity issues

Apple has been encountering a lot of issues with their new iOS update. One of these problems is the now trending issues in some technical forums like CNET.

Most of the users on iPhone that has iOS 6 are complaining about their Wi-Fi connectivity issues. They said that iOS 6 can connect to other networks but others can’t. According to one of the post on the said website, it cannot connect to a Netgear wireless router until it will be upgraded to the latest software. Another issue that was post on the forums is the AirPlay. This application was working fine before their iPod touch have updated to iOS 6.

Survey reveals disappointment with iOS6 from customers!

Recent surveys conducted by On Device shows that customers who upgraded to iOS6 from iOS5 are not thrilled about the  new upgrade.

The survey which was conducted on 16,000 people by On Device reveals that this is the first time there is such a noted drop in user satisfaction after an update. The results actually reveal this to be surprising considering the excitement among users who upgraded from iOS4 to iOS5.

On Device CEO had this to say:

We have always seen an increase in device satisfaction as consumer upgrades their mobile operating system from one version to another.

The major reason attributed to the drop in customer satisfaction can be the fact the iOS6 uses Apple’s own mapping services instead of the Google Maps as the previous version did!

High-Security spots revealed in Apple Maps

While the issues on Apple Maps continue, yet another issue came up. Apple Maps does not obscure or pixilate any security-risk spots.

The Verge did Maps comparison between Apple, Google and Nokia and found out that Apple displayed a clear picture of military installations that are sensitive to national interests of various countries.

This is not the only secured spots that have been clearly displayed in Apple Maps. Turkey’s island of Imrali where Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Öcalan, among the high-risk inmates jailed in a maximum security, is clearly displayed in iOS 6. In Japan Island of Minamitorishima, a vital military airstrip was also clearly displayed in iOS6. There are other sensitive or high security-risk locations that are displayed on iOS 6 Maps. US as part of NATO is not exempted as Apple Maps revealed its interests in Geilenkirchen, Germany.

Since 2005 Google has been providing mapping service. They always made sure that it is a habit to obscure high security-risk locations every time they show directions. Google also said that those images have never been blurred. As per Google, the images from their satellite arrived blurred on high security-risk locations.

On the other hand, while apple is busy on apologizing and cleaning their maps “mess”, Google has updated their maps showing 51 cities with its 45 degree imagery. This birds-eye image is available in 37 U.S and 14 International locations.

Google also updated 17 cities and 112 countries’ aerial images on their high-resolution satellite maps. 

If only Apple could have this updates after Google is done with it, then it will be one mess off at a time.

Apple Maps dropped 4 percent usage

Along with the updates of new iOS 6 comes a disastrous Apple Maps on the Apples new smartphone model, iPhone 5.

According to Snappli, who is responsible for compressing data and video which help people stay within their limits, claims that before iOS 6 update, 25% of iPhone users are using Google Maps. Now that users installed iOS 6 update to their iPhone, Google Maps usage has reach up to 35% compared to the homegrown Apple Maps which is only 4%.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO, issued an apology to iPad, iPhone and iTouch users with regard to its Apple Maps application. He also suggested for users to use other Map carriers such as the Nokia Maps and the Google Maps while Apple techs are cleaning up the mess.

As Snapplis’ data, iThings users heed the advice which increases the download of other maps. However, since Snappli is just one source, the data does not equate for all the activity of downloading new different maps in iPhone.

iOS 6 Released September 19th

The iOS 6 has been launched successfully with the cool new iPhone 5 and Apple has done a splendid job creating it. This OS was first shown in June 2012, as it announced that Apple won’t be partners with Google for the Google maps anymore and that the iDevices will have its own sets of maps, and other features including Passbook, Facetime over 3G, Facebook integration and Siri in the upcoming iPad 2.

Many Beta versions of the iOS 6 were released after the announcement and Apple again showed unwillingness to make a partnership with Google as it cancelled Google’s offer of pre installing the YouTube app, which now has to be downloaded from AppStore.

The iOS 6 supports most of the iDevices in use today. Apple has brought the update to iPhone 3GS and above for the iPhone series and the new iPad and iPad 2 for the iPad series and surprisingly, the update is also available for the fourth generation iPod touch.

The iPhone 5 has the iOS 6 already installed in it and all other devices by Apple, by now, should already update as the iOS 6 update was released on September 19th. The iPhone 5 was released on September 21st.

 

On the back hand, if you have an iPhone 3G or older, or the iPad original, you will not get the latest iOS6 update. So it’s a good time to start saving for an iPhone 5!

iPhone 5 Pre-Orders

iTunes get 10.7 update

Just after launching the iPhone 5, new iPod nano and iPod touch models, we expected Apple to lay off guard and watch the reviews of its unveiling event.

But Apple has more tricks in its sleeves than we expected and it has decided to launch the new update for iTunes on September 12th. It could not wait till the iOS 6 got launched in September 19th.  It has also released the Golden Master (GM) version of the OS to its creative developers.

The iTunes updates are expected to come with the new iPods and get a head start to work with the latest iOS 6 update.  It uses 165MB of storage and seems pretty good.

Apple has also released the final retail version of the iOS 6 for its developers. Although many iDevices have already used the iOS 6 Beta version, the iOS 6 GM developers can test their apps before the iOS 6 gets launched on September 19th.

Xcode 4.5GM was also released for all developers to make apps for iOS 6. The iOS 6 will work in most of Apple’s devices including the iPhone 5, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, new iPad, iPad 2 and also the fourth generation iPod touch.

Jailbreak of iPhone 5 happened a day after its release.

Grant Paul, who uses an online handle “chpwn”, is a renowned iPhone safe-cracker. Apparently, he already cracked the iPhone 5. He posted photos of his smartphone running the Cydia store, which is an online store that features apps that is not authorized by Apple. The image came with a caption "Taller screens like Cydia too. :)".

This post did not pass skeptics. They doubt that the photos had been Photoshopped which made Mr. Paul, to post other photos in which one of the pictures shows his iPhone 5 has a Cydia app store open and while the other photo shows the Cydia store running on the iPhone itself.

With these photos and news of jail breaking iphone 5 spread out, many iPhone users are eager to get away from homegrown App Store and unlock themselves through jail breaking. However, Grant Paul did not post the steps on how to unlock the iOS 6 just yet.

iOS6: Apples’ most popular update

After second day of Apples’iOS6 released, iPod touch, iPad and iPhone owners had already upgraded to the new OS. Last Thursday, it was announced that % 15 of iThings owners had downloaded the OS6 after the first day of its released. It was the most popular update compared to iOS 5 which was % 20 adoptions within 5 days.

Owners of Apple devices had no problem downloading the iOS 6 on their devices except for some owners who have been pining for Google maps to be returned on their homescreen due to the many problems that arises with Apple's own maps and navigation apps. A company spokesperson was very apologetic and appreciative about the reaction of the owners of Apple devices. He also explained that Maps in iOS 6 is a cloud-based solution and the more people will use it, the better it gets.

It may take time for the maps in iOS 6 to be finalized but will see, it might be even better than the previous iPhone maps.

iOS 6 to have updates for navigation apps

Faster, stronger and much more powerful, are the words to define the latest iOS 6 which will be coming shortly. And with such quick processing, the iOS 6 is going to feature more apps.

The latest version of the iOS 6 will now directly give pop-ups for the Maps app on a bar on top of the screen no matter which app you will currently be using.

For instance, if we are going in a taxi to a specific destination while playing a game, then a bar would appear on the top of the screen and tell us automatically to make a turn in order to reach our destination.
